James Avery Craftsman

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
James Avery Craftsman is a private company that designs, manufactures, and sells jewelry, primarily Christian in theme. Founder, James Avery, started the business in 1954 in Kerrville, Texas out of his two-car garage with about $250 in capital. The business has grown to about 200 independent retailers and 50 of its own stores in Colorado, Georgia, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas. The James Avery jewelry collection carries 1,100 designs and 14,000 pieces made in sterling silver, 14-, 18-karate yellow and white gold, and gemstones.

History

In the first year of business, Avery sold $5,500 worth of jewelry, and $7,500 the following year. He eventually moved his thriving business to a studio he built in his house close by. By 1957, Avery created his first catalog consisting of 16 pages and 39 items for sale. Also within the year he hired his first employee, Fred Garcia. The business continued to spread throughout the state of Texas with items being sold in clothing boutiques and church gift shops. By 1965, the jewelry store was incorporated into James Avery Craftsman, Inc., and soon after in 1967, Avery bought 20 acres (81,000 m2) of land where the corporate headquarters would soon stand.
By the 1970s the company employed 35 people and generated $400,000 in sales. In 1971, Chuck Wolfmueller, a student at the University of Texas working on a master's degree in business, was hired to help take the jewelry business to the next level. Wolfmueller initiated a number of changes and the business saw a 40 percent increase in his first year of employment.
The first retail store was established in North Dallas in 1973.

James Avery Jewelry Texas

James Avery Jewelry Texas
When it comes time to buy a diamond sometimes it gets a little stressful as you walk into a jewelry store and feel like you might be being put on. I mean who really believes that the store is actually discounting their prices 75% off. If they had it marked up that high then how in the world are we supposed to know what a normal retail price for a diamond really is? It’s complicated when you look into it. A search on the internet will take you through several pages of spam related sites with no real information about current diamond prices in site. The Rapaport Price List is the first real unbiased informative price list I came upon. Jewelry stores use it to price their diamonds and so should you if you can figure out how to use it.
Top 5 Tips to finding the current diamond price
1. Find a few diamond stores
You need to go to at least 5 different diamond stores in town. I went to James Avery, Sam’s wholesale, Americus Diamonds, and Jim’s Jewelers. I asked about what type of certification they had for their diamonds, if they were clarity enhanced, what carat, cut, color, depth and quality they were. I wrote this information down along with the diamond price and compared. What I discovered through this process is that certain stores would come down on their price once they realized you were shopping around. This allows you to establish even further what the real retail prices out their are.
2. Learn about the Diamond certification agencies out there.
There is the GIA certfied diamond. The diamond stores that offer these diamonds are serious. They advertise to the consumer in the know. The GIA certification is a certification of the diamonds quality and not a price appraisal. It is very important to know the diamond you are buying is worth the price you are paying for it. Knowing that your diamonds has a guarantee to be a certain color, cut, depth and quality gives you the peace of mind you need before forking out $5,000 or more if you are buying a large diamond. Even if your spending $3,000 it’s still very important to know the quality of the diamond. There are a few other certification agencies but they are diamond appraisals rather then a certification of the diamonds quality. Many of these appraisals are allowed to be done by the jeweler selling you the diamond. This type of appraisal is not to be trusted. If I can be as clear as possible, make sure you get a GIA certified diamond. GIA certified is the standard.
3. Get on Craigslist.com
Skip looking around on ebay. There are many stores on ebay selling diamonds and many of these sell clarity enhanced diamonds. A clarity enhanced diamond is one that is filled with glass in any cracked areas to make it look like their are no flaws. Not to say that all ebay diamonds are like this but the ones that are not like this have a suspicious way of getting bid up beyond a discount price. Ebay can very easily get you in trouble with something you haven’t actually seen and that does not have a GIA certification.
Craigslist on the other hand has many recently previously engaged people that had a recent broken relationship. They have the “I don’t want it syndrome”. Many times they still have the receipt of the store they bought it at. Several jewelry stores will give you a chance to trade in your ring for something at least 20% greater in valu

James Avery Jewelry Complete Guide-Review: Sterling Silver, Gold, Gemstones

James Avery

James Avery is a classic American company: started by a self-made man as modest family operation, it has grown into an all-round complete enterprise that offers jewelry for men, women, and children in a wide range of styles and materials. The company declare they want their jewelry to be “functional yet expressive” – and we would like to suggest that brand designers have indeed achieved their goal, the popularity of James Avery jewelry serving as the ultimate litmus test for this success.

Design

One of the most important aspects of James Avery design is the desire to amalgamate existing ideas, and create strong, effective blends. This company doesn't look to innovate or set new trends – it is at its best in preserving and refreshing what is already there, while giving it all a unique brand streak. In today's competitive climate, when innovation seems to be prized for its own sake, this traditional approach emerges, surprisingly, as bold and independent.

mes Avery defined four principles to guide the craftsmen: Simplicity, Integrity, Meaning, and Universality. The jewelry displays unambiguous, strong characteristics – expressive, well-defined forms, nature inspired, carefully stylized motifs from the flora and fauna, various geometrical and linear themes, and more. Another quality that's difficult to pinpoint, yet that permeates the entire assortment, is the spontaneous, effortless sense of charm.

Materials

Sterling silver occurs most often in James Avery rings, bracelets, charms, and other types of jewelry; its subdued yet persistent sheen accords well with brand design principles, and the undertone of modesty that knows its way into the playground – but won't abuse the path. Most of the pieces can be had in 14K and 18K gold as well, addressing the taste of customers who prefer the warmer, yellow tone of this precious metal.
Semi-precious stones play an important supporting role, occasionally rivaling silver (or gold) for attention. Peridot, citrine, zircon, sodalite, amethyst, sapphires, topaz, pearls, garnets, amethysts, tourmaline comprise only the partial list (thoughSilpada's is probably longer – this brand, however, focuses on alloys rather than silver); laboratory grown emeralds and rubies also make an appearance.

Jewelry

Let's take a closer looks at the jewelry (click on the links for dedicated reviews:)
  • Charms include over five hundred creations, categorized according to types and purposes. Themes feature a wide range of every day objects, symbols, and play jewelry: Indian inspired motifs (canoes, tents, head gear feathers, arrows); sports representations of tennis balls, fencing, aerobics; other pieces: fans, flashlights, cabins, animals, crosses, and more. James Avery's most versatile and playful department.
  • Rings enter a more serious territory, where close attention is paid to scroll and metalwork, gemstones, and supporting aesthetic qualities. This segment offer lace (filigree) rings, quite oriental in appearance, classic bands with stones (Julietta, Remembrance rings), heart and cross bearing pieces, wedding bands, and a several more adventurous models that echo the charms spirit.

  • Bracelets encompass almost the entire arch of contemporary jewelry designs: basic chains, identity bracelets, filigree bangles, heart and cross motifs, leather ropes, charm, link, and cuff bracelets, gold and silver two-tone variations, floral and geometrical themes, and more. Several engravable models.
  • Earrings offer hooks, post, drop (semi pendant) and wire categories, usually produced in classic, familiar patterns. Dangling earrings contain onyx, garnets, pearls, and other stones and materials; floral and botanical motifs reappear quite often, resulting in a calm, “rustling” effect. Several models match the rings and the bracelets to produce jewelry sets.

  • Necklaces/Pendants take us back to charms, but only from bird's eye view – the themes presented by the pendants are usually more mature, and fully fledged – only the general shapes and modes of attachment bring to mind the playfulness of the charms. A versatile category that includes, besides nature-inspired ideas, various crosses, and recognizable cultural symbols.
  • Crosses comprise a separate category that reaffirms James Avery emphasis on family and Christian values; this jewelry department offers serenity, nail, fleuree, ribbon, Latin, St. James, St. Teresa, and other types of crosses – almost a hundred all in all.
